I see a lot of posts on https://ipcamtalk.com/ saying Blue Iris shouldn't run on a VM. i got banned for this article, ask yourself who is controlling the narrative and if doing that really gets good information out there or if it causes misinformation? I wanted to share in-depth technical details about my own experience so that others can make an informed decision vs just going with the misguided advice of one person. Usually when someone has trouble with VMs, it's because they use an old crappy machine and expect great performance. Or they buy a "server" on ebay that's out of date and painfully slow. I always worry about the files and data we'd lose if our house were to burn down. With those fears in mind I was ecstatic to test the ioSafe N2 fireproof and waterproof NAS for SmallNetBuilder. It was much more than a cute feature review, we actually threw this thing in to the fire, let it burn for 30 minutes, then pulled it out and submerged it in a tub of water for 3 days. It's worth the read and a great product if you have no backup solution in case of fire. You can see the entire article over on SmallNetBuilder, ioSafe N2 NAS Reviewed.

    HWg-STE ethernet thermometer

If you're lucky enough to have an HWg-STE ethernet thermometer for monitoring temps in your network closet or home theater cabinet, you know how hard it is to find the 1-wire temp sensor to complete both sensor inputs if you only have one sensor. In this short article I'll show you how to make one with a few parts from Home Depot and ebay.

tuxgrpahics ethernet garage door opener in Panasonic battery case

Awhile back I reviewed the tuxgraphics smartphone garage door opener, which you can purchase here. After using it for awhile I decided it was the perfect candidate for a simple bat file. This short article will show you how to monitor whether your garage door is open or closed with just the use of a bat file. You might have interest in doing this if your family often forgets to close the door and you're worried about theft from your garage.

    Network Speed gauge

Over the weekend I reorganized the HomeNetworkEnabled forums. It had been six months since inception and I had a little time to analyze what was useful and what wasn't. On the useful front, I realized benchmarks of network performance are useful. With this revelation I added two forums to the LAN Speed Test forum, one for wireless speed test results, and another for wired speed test results. As I started to delve in to it a little more however, I realized some context is definitely in order. In what I can only describe as a geeky epiphany, I ran around the house collecting performance figures on all of our devices. I decided to put this together as a 3-part series. The first will explore wired speeds, the second will explore wireless speeds, and the third will look at the effect of antivirus on performance numbers.

    tuxgraphics smartphone garage door opener

Craftsman just recently released their AssureLink Garage Door Openers which allow you to check and close your garage door via your smartphone. The openers themselves are fairly pricey ($289.99 if you don't want battery backup, $296.99 if you do). Internet connectivity is free the first year, but jumps to $19.99 a year thereafter. Twenty bucks a year seems a little pricey simply for the convenience of seeing if your door is open via your smartphone. If you feel it's something you need, but don't want the extra cost AND you have a little electrical know-how, the tuxgraphics smartphone garage door opener may be just the ticket for you.

    TotuSoft
has graciously provided Home Network Enabled with licenses for their LAN Speed Test Server and LAN Speed Test v2.0 and I'm happy to announce we will be using it as our official speed testing software going forward. LAN Speed Test v2.0 is said to be more accurate than v1.0 and should give good and consistent baselines for most testing. I won't be revisiting old articles where v1.0 was used, but all articles going forward will use v2.0 and Server where appropriate.
